When Miss California Carrie Prejean stood up for what she believed in, she faced public ridicule and ultimately lost her title. The furor began when the media were surprised and offended by her honest, forthright, and polite response to a question she was asked by one of the pageant judges.

• Think about ways family members may be called upon to "stand up" for God's truth.  What might be the consequences of standing up?  Discuss what you would do in the following situations, or share a situation that actually happened to you and how you dealt with it:

  • You notice another child who is being bullied, picked on, or passed over by others
  • You are asked to help someone cheat on a test or give answers for homework
  • You notice cheating at work or are asked to participate, stealing time by taking long breaks, bringing home things that belong to the office, etc.
  • Your friends invite you to a place or event that you know your parents would not approve
  • You see an acquaintance or relative littering in public, or hear about them stealing cable TV
  • See what other scenarios you can come up with.
    
    
• How difficult can it be to do the right thing and/or stand up for what is right? Look at what happened to Peter (Luke 22:33-34)? How will the world react when we stand up? (1 Cor 2:14) What can you do to make sure that you will make the right decision when the time comes to stand up? Take a look at what Daniel did in Daniel 1:8; he made up his mind before hand. Also, check out Matthew 10:16.
  
  
• See if you can figure out a character trait (there could be a few but we are going to zero in on one) that is the foundation or key element to be able to stand up for what is right.  (courage). How do you develop courage in your life? (this is not an easy question so let them struggle with it for a while then help them figure these out)
  1. Acknowledge your fears – admit what you are afraid of an come up with a game plan of how to stand strong against those fears.
  2. Keep company with the courageous – courage can be contagious so hang out with others who have proven themselves to brave. It is also good to know that someone has your back when you have to take a stand.
  3. Never forget Who is ultimately in control – 1 Timothy 1:7. The epitaph on the tomb of Lord Lawrence in Westminster Abby states “He feared man so little because he feared God so much.”
     
     
• Whenever you "stand up," you risk "standing out."  It isn't easy, but Jesus promises to more than make up for our losses (Mark 10:29-31)
